My Word of the Year & How to Choose Your Own
This is a practice that I started a few years ago. Sure, I still set goals, but as we saw with 2020, things happen that are out of our control, and those goals might need to be adjusted or reset. A word (or theme, if you will) will help you stay focused on how you want to feel, all year long, no matter what life throws at you.
In 2020, my word of the year was Focus, and looking back, this helped me more than anything else throughout the year.
Want to choose your own Word of the Year? Check out these tips on narrowing it down:
Think about last year. What was your biggest accomplishment? What could you have done differently? What would you like to carry into the new year with you?
Think about what you want to accomplish in 2021. What would a perfect year look and feel like? Where would you like to see yourself in 3, 6, 9, and 12 months?
Think about the upcoming year, and write down what you want to work on or accomplish in all areas of your life: Personal, Career, Family, Spiritual, Health, and Social.
If you write down answers to the questions above, is there a common thread? Brainstorm a few words that come to you, and continue to narrow it down until you find a word that encompasses what you want in 2021.
Write the word down, post it in a prominent place. Refer back to it when you’re feeling lost or off track.
My word for 2021 is Further. At first, I thought about “Forward.” But regardless of what happens in the next year, we’ll all still be moving forward. Further takes it up a level. It pushes me past what I already know I can achieve, and reminds me there’s so much more just beyond that.
I hope that you give this exercise a try, & that your 2021 is full of joy & new beginnings. Be sure to let me know if you’ve chosen a word of the year, or what goals you’re shootings for in 2021!
